Briefly describe your program or role with farm to school in Massachusetts. Descriptions can be very brief “snapshots” (a couple sentences, or up to 150 words). Examples include, but are not limited to, farm to school programs, projects, events, or activities in the cafeteria, classroom, or school garden; educational initiatives; profiles of farms or food hubs selling products to schools for inclusion in school meals; examples of menus or meals created with Massachusetts grown ingredients; profiles of farms hosting school field trips or other programs for students; or work being done in support of farm to school by educators, foodservice, and other staff or support organizations or individuals.

Examples of Brief “Snapshots:

  1. XYZ school’s garden is providing hands-on learning opportunities for 500 K-5 students. The students help to plant and harvest crops, some of which are used in the school’s meals program
  2. XYZ public schools highlighted Massachusetts grown apples in September.  Students sampled several varieties of apples grown by XYZ Farm. The apples were also used in an apple crisp as part of school meals in September.
  3. School foodservice staff at XYZ school procured a hydroponic growing system and is growing lettuce and herbs used in school meals. The school’s science department developed a curriculum where students learn about hydroponic growing in their science class which reaches over two hundred 7th graders each year.
  4. XYZ School participated in MA Farm to School’s Harvest of the Month Program where they highlighted a different Massachusetts crop each month. As part of March Dairy Month, dairy farmer XYZ in Hatfield visited the school and spoke to a group of 5th graders about life on a dairy farm.

A submission does not guarantee being featured on the website. MDAR and program partners have the right to edit submissions for clarity or space constraints. MDAR will make determinations based on how closely the submission aligns with the Program description found above and supports Farm to School in Massachusetts; represents different types of farm to school programing and projects and demonstrates geographic equity.

MDAR may request photographs from selected submissions. If photographs are provided or requested, you will be required to verify permission to both use and share the photograph with MDAR for MDAR’s further use.
